once upon a time in SECOND grade...

Welcome to 2-207's blog... dedicated to documenting the endless adventures of my second grade class at PS 58 in New York City! I'm Miss Wilkes and I LOVE Brooklyn, PS 58, AND my 24 fabulous second graders that I am lucky enough to spend TWO years with!

Okay, that’s all for now!

So proud of all the kids of 2-207! For working hard, for doing your best, for being good sports, and for having lots of fun :)

Even MORE Field Day FUN!

More Field Day Fun!!

We are back from Field Day! It didn’t rain and we had a GREAT TIME!!!

Urban Planning!

We are working in groups, integrating social studies and math, to create our own city plan! Each group’s plan is super different which makes it super neat!

We named our communities and considered the wants and needs of any community. We also thought about the geographical features that make a city appealing.

Then we used the second grade math standards to add all of these components to our maps! We studied measurement (inches, centimeters, perimeter, and area) as well as geometry (comparing 2-d shapes, partitioning shapes using fraction vocabulary) to add a ton of cool features to our maps. Each feature corresponds to a key so that everyone can see what our communities have to offer.

They are amazing! We can’t wait to share them when they are completed!

Friday fun in 2-207!

Thank you to everyone who came to our READERS THEATER performance!

It was so much fun to share it with you. We worked so hard on it and felt super proud after the performance was over.

We loved studying fairy tales and their new adaptations!

We learned all about why authors decide to rewrite traditional tale in the first place! Maybe they did not like how a character was stereotyped! Maybe they disagreed with the moral! Maybe they wanted to make it relevant to a different group of people! Maybe they wanted to teach others about a group of animals or a specific setting. Maybe they  just wanted to make it more entertaining for kids today!

Whatever the reason, we had lots of fun writing our OWN adaptations to The Three Little Pigs. We got to know this tale VERY well as we read a ton of it’s adaptations and performed three of them during Readers Theater!

Reading like a movie star ALL THE TIME is SO important. If you think reading is boring, you aren’t doing it right! Put yourself in your characters shoes, read like a movie star and hop right into your book! I promise, you’ll love it!

More pictures from the Museum of the City of New York!

On Thursday we went to the Museum of the City of New York!

We learned all about Urban Planning! First, we stopped to think about what New York City was like in the 1600s! Did you know that at that time there were less than a thousand people living in New Amsterdam (that’s what NYC used to be called)? Now there are about 8 MILLION New Yorkers!

A city that big needed a BIG plan! That’s what Urban Planners are for!

We learned that New York City’s streets are organized using a grid! This allows every inch of land to be utilized and it’s super easy to navigate! We also learned about how skyscrapers are an amazing use of space, using very little space at ground level but stretching high into the sky with lots of room for different things.

Then we learned about the different zones of the city: the industrial zone, the commercial zone, the residential zone, the institutional zone, and the parks and open spaces zone. Each zone contains buildings and places that meet similar needs. We split into groups to learn more about each zone and then we got to create a building that went with our zone.

After we were all finished, we placed our buildings onto the grid. We really had to stop and think about where to put our buildings? Does a factory make sense next to a school? What should be near an apartment building?

It was really need to see how it all turned out! After we went to Central Park because it was gorgeous out! It was a really nice day and 2-207 would like to thank the chaperones who came with us! You rock!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, grandmas, and aunts of 2-207!! We love you!
